The Centre for One Health (COH), Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences
University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, organized an Expert Lecture Series on “Advances in
Livestock Genomics and Bioinformatics”, bringing together eminent scientists from the
National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB), Hyderabad, along with faculty
members, postgraduate researchers and students of the university.
Dr. J.S. Bedi, Director, Centre for One Health, welcomed the distinguished speakers
and participants and pitched strongly for long-term collaborative research between
GADVASU and NIAB in areas of genomics, bioinformatics and One Health. Dr. Bedi
underscored the need for interdisciplinary approaches to address emerging challenges in
animal health, productivity and zoonotic disease management.
Dr. R.S. Sethi, Dean, College of Animal Biotechnology, GADVASU, emphasized the
importance of strengthening academic and research linkages between premier institutions for
advancing livestock genomics and precision animal health.
The expert lectures featured Dr. Sarwar Azam, Scientist-D, NIAB, who spoke on
initiatives for conservation and genomic improvement of indigenous cattle. Dr. Shailesh
Sharma, Scientist at NIAB, delivered an engaging lecture on the role of long non-coding
RNAs and bioinformatics-driven antiviral drug discovery. Dr. Sandeep Kushwaha, Scientist
at NIAB, elaborated on the application of computational genomics and next-generation
sequencing in improving cattle health and welfare.
The sessions witnessed active participation from postgraduate researchers and faculty
of GADVASU, leading to fruitful discussions on future research collaborations and capacity
building.
Dr. R.S. Randhawa, Dean, College of Veterinary Science, GADVASU, during a
meeting with the experts focussed to map out potential collaborative research areas and
academic exchange opportunities between the institutions.
Dr J.P.S Gill, Vice-Chancellor appreciated the University efforts to bring such
scientific discussions and motivating the young researchers for carrying out applied field
level research.
